What Are the Causes of Diabetes?

There is no one cause of diabetes because it depends on each individual case and the type of diabetes being discussed.

In type 1 diabetes the immune system destroys the cells that make insulin.  These cells are found in the pancreas.  Type 1 diabetes can be caused by a trigger.  Triggers include viral infection, genetics, and other things.  Vitamin D may be a factor.   Type 1 can start quickly.

Type 2 involves family history and lifestyle.  Being overweight and not being physically active can contribute to type 2 diabetes.  Type 2 may develop over a period of years.

Both kinds of diabetes that are out there can be dangerous to your health. The best way to combat diabetes is to know all about it.

For example, do not be alarmed if you experience high blood sugar levels immediately after you treat a low glucose reaction. This means could mean that you are eating and drinking more than you should to fix your low level or that your body is releasing hormones to make up for the low level. The next time this happens, try cutting your normal meal in half and double check your glucose levels a half an hour later.

Certain foods have been assigned a glycemic index rating that reflects how they will have an impact on your blood sugar levels. Low glycemic index numbers are the best ones for people who suffer from diabetes.  Make a list of high glycemic index foods and learn to identify potential problem foods and ingredients. Breads, desserts, pastas, cereal, and even juices are products that are high in the glycemic index. Processed foods and carbohydrates can been dangerous for diabetics. Concentrate on raw vegetables, fresh fruit, meat, and fish instead.

Become label conscious about grocery store items.  If you find HFCS on the label, pick something else. If you live in or go to Canada, look for ‘glucose/fructose’ on labels.

Many no cost methods are available to help you lose weight and combat diabetes, including working out at a park and jogging. Go to the park and use the jungle gym to do chin ups. If you want to stay home, do some weight training with bags filled with heavy objects.

Managing your lifestyle is the key to defeating complications from diabetes. When you are able to maintain a normal lifestyle, you can avoid many of the dangerous side effects.
