Brief History of the American Diabetes Association
The American Diabetes Association was founded in 1940 as a scientific and
medical organization. They are now in their 69th year of serving people with diabetes.
They have more than 400,000 general members-people with diabetes or their loved ones,
800 full-time staff, more than 18,000 health professional members and over 150,000 participating
diabetes advocates. The American Diabetes Association is the only organization that
serves all people with diabetes and all people affected by diabetes.
ADA's Mission
The American Diabetes Association is
leading the fight against the deadly consequences
of diabetes and fighting for those affected by diabetes. The Association is responsible for funding
research to prevent, cure and manage diabetes. It delivers services to hundreds of communities;
provides objective and credible information; and gives voice to those denied their rights
because of diabetes.
Volunteers
Whether you have diabetes or you know someone who does, the ADA has many
ways that you can volunteer. It is only through the contributions of volunteers time and money
that the ADA can continue to do the work they have set out to do. Creating a team and walking to raise
money, helping pass out pamphlets in your community to raise awareness, and answering phones are
just some of the ways you can help the ADA to continue leading the fight against diabetes. Visit the ADA website for more ways
to volunteer.
